The drive up and back is scenic.

Think of how much fun you'll have ditching the parents

Aside from having some of the economic effects of an up-and-coming tourist trap (e.g., price markups, eyesores where wilderness should be untouched, and rowdy youth on break times), McCall is a great place to end up with the family and not die of cabin fever. If you like small town mingling, lake activities, or outdoor recreation, you definitely won't feel like you "(drove) up for nothing".

McCall's got several great burger joints and quaint cafes, and you'll get a load of all of them just driving the main stretch.

I'm a big fan of places that offer "homemade" pub fare in a dimly lit log building, and I remember two of those in McCall that not only offered the motif, but great fare (likely more now that a good decade has passed).

Yup, I haven't been there for quite a while, but even back then I definitely remember it being a worthwhile place to unwind and recreate.

And for the scenic drives in the area, you could pretty much pick a road and get great results.

If you've got a dependable high clearance vehicle and aren't acrophobic, I'd recommend driving the road to Brundage Ski Area past the lodge/lifts up to around the Goose Lake trailhead for some eye popping views of the valleys and mountains of central Idaho. If you go for a short hike in some areas, it only gets better.

Otherwise, any road will take you through beautiful meadows and serene forest.

awesome thanks. i guess we'll see how it goes. i'm not really looking to be impressed, but my parents are visiting, and I have only lived here a year, so i'm just bored of it and want a short drive where there is actually something nice to look at. my parents have been to mccall but it was back in the 70's so its not like they really remember it

hmm. just bored of...hanging around i guess. i'm from eastern idaho and although i like the weather here more, and the fact that there are more places to eat, that is about all i like. just bored of sitting home all day for the past 15 months, lol! not used to living somewhere and knowing no one and having no one to do anything with. that's all. so with my parents finally visiting us i wanted to do something i don't normally get to do.

It gets aweful busy on weekends and holidays in the spring and summer, but it is a pretty neat town.. Lots of eateries, bar's, etc... I think it would be cool to spend some time there.

Default Junior Steelheads

If you like watching hockey, this is the premier year of the Junior Steelheads team, and they will have their first home games in Boise on Fri and Sun, and in McCall on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Junior hockey is where kids ages 16-20 play to start their careers in professional or collegiate hockey. They will be playing the San Diego Gulls and the rink is right on the main road going into McCall.

I know that feeling all too well. Really, when I've had more friends and family where I'm living, not to mention a lot more free time and social workplaces, I was never much of an Internet buff. It wasn't until I started moving around as a cubicle drone that I got into social networking, chat threads, and dating sites. Really, they've all been quite rewarding. I've been a yuppie for five years now, and I'm still getting used to the different social dynamics from service sector and college, where it was a lot easier to make friends and stay on top of where it's happening.

Anyway, my favorite site for overall social yield is meetup.com. You may want to check that out if the loneliness becomes grating. I don't know how it would work out in Boise, but in Vegas it practically overloads my Inbox with activities and get-togethers on a daily basis.
