When I first got my kindle I decided I would never be like Dawn who had 1000 books on her to-read list. I vowed I would use self restraint and only look at a sample or two before definitely reading it or deleting it. I would never have so many books and samples I couldn't find anything to read. I had the best of intentions.

Face it we all have an addiction and we will never catch up. I need to be more like Dawn and stop reading books that are just OK.

Hahaha! "Hi, my name is Dawn and I'm addicted to books. Help me!" ... "No, don't help me."

Lisa, it took me a long time to realize that I didn't have to finish every book that I started, even if I didn't much like it. And then there's peer pressure: "Well, so-and-so loved it, so I should at least FINISH it!" But no, there's no need. I know that it's hard to get into that mind set, but I'm so glad that I did. I used to push myself to read to the end -- but that's not fun, it's not enjoyable.

When I stopped forcing myself to continue with a book that I wasn't enjoying, it was freeing -- liberating! -- and I found that I enjoyed reading even MORE after that, because I'd only read what I wanted to. Sometimes I'll stop halfway through -- like if the plot got too implausible -- and sometimes I can tell in the first few pages that this book -- be it because of the story or because of the writing style -- isn't going to work for me. I feel no guilt. None. Zero. I just find something else that I *do* like.

Seriously, Lisa, it's the best thing I ever did.

I also do not continue with books I am not enjoying. Life is far too short and there are so many books out there that will be enjoyable. I managed to get my mom to do it at least once as there were so many times she would tell me she didn't like what she was reading but felt like she had to finish. If you are disappointed that you aren't enjoying something, keep it on the TBR list and try again another time.

I kept hearing about "The Boy Kings of Texas" so I ordered it and even though I have two books ahead of it, I couldn't help but read the first few pages. WOW. I love the writing style. Can't wait to dive into that one! But first I have to finish two biographies by Tracy Borman, who is my current favorite history writer (on English history). Actually my very favorite writer on that topic is Peter Ackroyd but I think I've read everything he's ever written - LOL.
