I just read that ATLAS SHRUGGED Part 1 will be hitting the big screen in the Spring of 2011. Ayn Rand is one of my favorite authors. I would advise any of you that have not read Atlas Shugged to do so before you see the movie. It is going to be VERY interesting to see how closely the script of the movie follows the spirit of the book. I haven't been to a movie theater since Saving Pvt. Ryan hit the big screen but I will buy a ticket to Atlas Shrugged part 1.
Oh BTW if you are a slow reader and you want to read it before going to the movie you better start reading now. It is over 1,200 pages long if I remember correctly. John Galt's speech covered over 50 pages by itself.
I just finished Atlas Shrugged about a week ago. a great book and provided a lot of thought-provoking issues. I don't know that I would want to see the movie. I have such pictures in my head of how the characters look and react, that I don't think I would want to see someone else's interpretation of that. It is definitely not a quick-read and you are right about John Galt's speech. I would highly recommend the book.

I had a bumper sticker in college "Who is John Galt?"
I'm a bit apprehensive. It's one of my favorite books - I've read it 5 or 6 times and will probably read it many more. Like sgresident - I have such vivid pictures of what the characters are like that I'm not sure I'll be able to adapt my version to the movie version. Plus - there is sooooo much in the book - I feel like they would need to make about 5 or 6 movie installments to come close to doing it justice!
The cast that I envision is Cate Blanchett as Dagney, Damian Lewis as Galt, a young Paul Newman as Reardon (yes, I know - not possible!), Eric Bana as D'Anconia, and that's about all that I picture right now. Still - even if those people were to play the roles - it still probably wouldn't be exactly like I picture things in my mind.
You can't even scratch the surface of a 1200 page book with a movie.

Yes John but this is Titled A.S. Part 1.
Who knows how many sequels will follow.
