Okay, I know I said I was going to read a Clive Barker. Changed my mind and took down my copy of Lord of the Rings yesterday afternoon. By the time I set it down to go to bed last light, Frodo, Sam and Pippin were just heading down the hill after their night among the elves and, looking back up the hill, saw the Black Rider at the top. I look forward to their dinner with the farmer and the flight to the ferry, as well as the entrance into the Old Forest.
Have you read Tolkien before? That is a great series. I highly recommend The Silmarillion, for all the background history.
I just read Broken Window by Jeffrey Deavers. It was the second Lincoln Rhyme (main character) crime mystery by him that i read. It must have been good, because I read the nearly 600 pages in two 1/2 days....woulda been sooner too, if it wasn't for those darn kids!

This is at least the 3rd, possibly the 4th reading, because I agree it's a great book. I have it all in one volume and in the forward the author does say that, though it was originally published in three volumes, it IS one book. I do have a copy of the Silmarillion. Also have The Hobbit (which I might read again once I finish LotR) and all of the Books of Lost Tales. There's one more which I need to add to my collection. Came across The Children of Hurin a couple of years ago at the library (either authored or edited by Christopher Tolkien from his father's notes) and really want it in my Tolkien collection.
BTW, in my reading yesterday, I've gotten to Rivendell and Frodo has met up with Bilbo in the hall before the reading of Bilbo's new lay.
It is definitely the kind of book that lends itself to multiple readings. I've read it (and related stories) so many times I've lost count. My kids are getting to the age that I will introduce them to it pretty soon. My oldest (DD) is nine, but she's reading and enjoying Harry Potter, so a first reading of Tolkien can't be that far off. Looking forward to it.
I forget the name of it, but there is a book comprised completely of maps of Middle Earth, including ancient times and the travels of the Valar, Noldor, etc. Very interesting.
Just into "Hard, Hard City" by Jim Fusilli, an intelligent, knowledgeable mystery by a writer who is more than just a novelist. I think I'm going to enjoy it.
I've now finished it. I don't read many mysteries, but I did quite like it. Nice story that involves teenagers. Not a who-dunit, but a Whad-hedo.
Next project. "Seeing" by Jose Saramago. An odd book with no dialog and 2-page-long paragraphs.
Right now I'm reading "Same Kind of Different as Me" which I'm really liking, and next I want to read "Wicked" since I'm going to see the show next week.
Just finished Sleep No More by Greg Iles - Thriller/Paranormal - Good book. Attractive woman flirts with married guy. The kicker is, she does and says the same things an old college girlfriend used to do, but that college girlfriend was murdered 10 years ago. How could she know these things? What does she want? Are his wife and business partner involved with her in some sort of con?
