I finished The One-in-a-Million Boy by Monica Ward. It was sappy and sweet and and hugely far-fetched -- everything that I *hate* in a book. But I *loved* this book.
Red sky at morning - Richard Bradford, c1968, J. B. Lipincott Co. Coming of age in Corazón Sagrado (near Los Alamos?), northern NM, during WWII. The protagonist & family go to NM to escape Mobile, AL, & the weather there - for health reasons. A good ear for dialog, local history, local culture, fair Spanish. Lots of family questions to resolve, quirky personalities in the town & out. 238pp. An engaging read, an easy way to learn about NM culture, & bits of AL culture. His next novel So far from Heaven, centers on Reyes Tijerina in NM. Mrs. SW88 has it out from the library, so it's on the list too.

Red sky was also made into a movie - twice?
Red Sky at Morning is a great book and actually this is a case of where I liked the movie (with Richard Thomas) more than the book. That rarely happens to me.
I love New Mexico and have visited many times. This book is a perfect example of "New Mexico: Me Encanta." It is an enchanting place. Plus, I like the unofficial slogan of Albuquerque: "Tomorrow is good enough for me." Right on!
Another really fine book about New Mexico is The Milagro Beanfield War. It's great fun but also serious. The movie is equally as good.

Yah, the movie (both of Red Sky?) is apparently available on Internet. I'll give the Thomas version a look.
Yep, I liked Redford's (?) take on Milagro. It was an appealing movie, I remember reading the book, but I think it was after the fact. Some friends recommended the movie, very entertaining - & some serious things to say, too.
