Reading Requiem for a Gypsy--#4 in a series of police procedurals by Michael Genelin--the main character a female Police Commander in Slovakia named Jana Matinova..she is kind of the Jane Tennison of Slovakia...
earlier books give first part of her career and personal life--later ones are more crime centered.
Interesting for the Slovakia setting with the internal political politics--good plots and one criminal is an ongoing character
I think the writer who is an attorney writes in English and doesn't need a translation--the prose is smooth and pretty effortless to read...I enjoy them...
I have read a series of books set in. FL about sheriff deputy in FL panhandle--character is Larry Macklin
His father is the sheriff--he has girlfriend who is vet tech
Kind of low key
Not gang crime but more realistic, small town ones
Titles have a month in them so cyclical pacing
Has new one out that is Kindle Unlimited-=free if you are subscriber...
In 1897 Buck, an intrepid shepherd dog, is kidnapped and shipped to the Klondike gold fields. There he must learn "the law of club and fang"--Or die. Buck learns quickly how to survive: keeping warm in a frozen land, scenting perilous changes in the weather, and protecting himself against the lead sled dog, Spitz. But most important, he learns the song of the wolves, as plaintive and old as the breed itself.
For book club - spirited discussion. Lots about cruelty to animals, & our pets.

Like The Milagro beanfield war, shorter, more tightly focused on a family of protagonists. A more realistic view of the land grant issue in New Mexico. A wide kaleidoscope of characters. A good, short read.
So I have really been on a roll with great books-- several of which were for book clubs, and several were mentioned either on this forum or another one. September October great reads!
The Orphan Keeper
The One in a Million boy
Before We Were Yours
The Radium Girls
Educated
Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper
Those were the really good ones. Highly recommend those above.
I just finished The Thief of All Light which was for book club, and it was a pretty quick read, definitely not my usual as it was a detective type but really not a pleasant topic and just really didn't get me.
I am now about to start Secrets of a Charmed Life and it looks like it's got some potential.
