By the Way, "Orphans" reads like an absurdist piece, about a protagonist that one cannot possibly identify with the thought processes of. I don't know if he meant it that way in a satirical fashion, one never knows whether to laugh, or be annoyed by it..
Well, I might try out the other ones, in that case, once my "to read" pile is shorter than me!

Murder Within Murder, Richard and Frances Lockridge, New York, 1943

This is one of the first Mr. and Mrs. North mysteries. A husband and wife find a murder in every novel. Mrs. North tends to be one step ahead of the police. Mr. North tries to keep her out of trouble. The mysteries are well devised; the setting provides a brief glimpse into earlier times.

The stories aren't quite cosies; they're not quite police procedurals. But they are most enjoyable.

I'll say it's good, and right on target.

I just read two books by Linda Castillo: Sworn To Silence and Pray For Silence. They are murder/mystery's. I could not put either book down, they were so good and suspenseful. I highly recommend this author.

Before you rush out and read it, you should know it is written by a notorious racist white supremacist. This 40 year old book is still in print because it keeps getting republished by the author himself.

I have no objection to any book being mentioned or lauded in this thread, but in order to preserve the objectivity, I think it is useful to red-flag vanity press books that are often touted by an extremist fringe.

The author treats the topic of assimilation at length. He details the assimilation of ethnic groups such as Irish and German as they became Americans as opposed to members of an ethnic enclave in America. He uses a fascinating illustration in the case of the Irish.

When John F. Kennedy ran for president against Richard Nixon, it comes as no surprise that he carried a huge majority of the Irish Catholic vote. But as the author points out, 25% of Irish Catholics voted for Richard Nixon. It would be hard to say that they had not been assimilated. He delineates the demographic differences between these and other ethnic minorities, pointing out, for example, that many people of Mexican heritage (I don't recall the percentage as I read the book many years ago) still are primarily Spanish speakers.

It's a fascinating work, well documented.

I am reading The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne on my Kindle. Got that sucker for free and what a great book. It really is amazing that something written so long ago is still interesting today. Books as a form of entertainment definitely hold up better than video.

When I watch old movies I usually find myself thinking "Did they really talk and act like that?" but it never seems to happen with books.

Reading Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank - first re-read in a LONG time........amazingly it still holds up quite well as an apocalyptic novel even though it was first published in 1959.
