Star Island by Carl Hiaasen. I love his novels with South Florida as the setting.

"Wait for Me" memoirs of Deborah Mitford, Duchess of Devonshire - by herself

It helped very much that I had read "The Mitford Sisters" by Mary Lovel many years ago.

The Duchess is 91 now and living in a cottage in the grounds of Chatsworth, UK, as her son and daughter in law are the present Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Andrew her husband died in 2004. Her husband's brother, Billy, was married for 6 weeks to Kathleen Kennedy before being killed. The dowager - as she is now reffered to - lived a fascinating life.

The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami.

I've been on a Murakami trip ever since I read A Wild Sheep Chase.

I enjoy reading didactic books...such as historical novels, "The Pillars of the Earth" is one of them.
Others are "Sarum" by Edward Rutherfurd and "The Covenant" by James A. Michener...and many more by the same authors.

The thicker, the better...

I LOVE PotE, & read The Covenant last year & learned an enourmous amount of history! I did read Sarum years ago...I should probably re-visit it, I remember being interested in it's ancient history in particular.

Currently I am reading Atlas Shrugged. I'm halfway & liking it.

Also re-reading Grapes of Wrath for my book club. I think everyone else, save one, in the group either hates it or is choosing not to read it. I'm enjoying it as much as I did previously, I really love the family.

I had to buy "Sarum" 3 times!
Between my nephew (who also happens to be a voracious reader)and I, we've dog-eared 2 paper backs from reread and rendered them useless.
Just last week, he visited and decided to read it again and asked to borrow my 3rd one for a few days...

I'm going to check out Atlas Shrugged...thanks!

Alaska is another good read by Michener.

Lamb: The Gospel according to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal had me in stitches throughout the entire book.
I wonder if you've read any of John Irving's books. Ordinarily...I'm into serious read, but "Hotel New Hampshire" started me on a new path.
