I'm also reading The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty. This book is so good that I went to Amazon hoping to see more books that she's written. She has 2 more, The Rest of Her Life and While I'm Falling.

I also recommend Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock. As a seasoned reader, I'm rarely surprised by the ending of a book. Thats why I quit reading "whodunits" years ago. I was shocked by the ending to Me & Emma. I hadn't read any reviews about it like I usually do, so I wasn't expecting this shocker of an ending. After I read it, I went back and read some of the reviews and others were equally thrown for a loop. It's a very good book.
One of the greatest, most surprising endings of all is in A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving, also on my list of best books of all time. The wonderful thing about this book is that every quirky thing that happens in the story is necessary to the ending. Has anyone read it?

I read "a prayer for owen meany" many years ago. I loved it. I agree about the quirky thing in the book that is important in the end.

I guess I will break down and read this book. I've heard so many good things about it. I am not an Irving fan but I think I need to read this one.

I have to say, I also thought Love in the Time of Cholera was too depressing. And I'm saying this as a person who can read literature from any time period, from the most classic to the most modern, and as a person who loves many latino authors such as Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel and Luis Alberto Urrea.
That reminds me, I haven't mentioned books by Mr. Urrea yet on this forum, other than to put his novel The Hummingbird's Daughter on my list of my favorite books of all time. People either love this book or hate it, but I think it's one of the greatest novels ever - it deals with Mexican history, spirituality, women's power...so many things...but all done with great humor. A somewhat lighter novel of his that is also great is Into the Beautiful North. Check them out!
I will definitely check them out. Thank you.

I read it, and really didn't care for it. Owen got on my nerves with all of his "screaming". I thought too much of it was slow, until the end, and that could have happened a lot sooner. And, I'm someone who likes long books.

ETA: I did love The World According to Garp though.

I am reading "Full Circle" by Ferdiand Mount.

Its about the resemblance of the 21st Century to the Classical World in terms of institions, entertainment, sexual morality.. interesting account of society today since the fall of Rome ... Quite interesting !

The Big Short by Michael Lewis

It's about the the leadup to the financial crisis--scary, enlightening and depressing, by turns.

I just started reading After America by John Birmingham. I am currently too annoyed after reading about "screaming" chickens to find much enthusiasm for it. A few other strange sentences also caught my eye. A Justin Cronin this guy is not.

I have tried reading After America, twice. Twice now I have put it down. I think I'll move on to another book.
