This is a first! The mail usually comes between 1pm and 4pm but today it came at 9.15am!

I received Two Lives by Vikram Seth and The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck. My to-read pile is getting high... and there are more coming! YAY!

I'm going to start on The Winter of Our Discontent at some point today, after the second load of laundry is done. Who here said that she reads it every year or every couple of years? I don't remember who it was now.

I started The Winter of Our Discontent but I'm not in the right head-space for this type of writing.

Now I can't decide between Two Lives by Vikram Seth or The Cancer Ward by the Russian dude whose name I can't pronounce, write, or even remember. I really had hoped that Downtown by Pete Hamill would arrive today; that's what I'm in the mood for. Anyway...

I'm doing some cooking, then going out for dinner (I know -- I cook and then go out???), and will start one of those books tonight or tomorrow, not sure which time or which book.

If anyone wants to vote on Two Lives vs. The Cancer Ward, go ahead. I'll do what you tell me to do because it seems I can't make any decisions on my own today.

I'm reading "A Storm of Swords", 3rd book of the "Song of Ice and Fire" series. What a good series! I can't stop reading!

Dawn, I am amazed at how quickly you get through a book!

I listened to "Running with the Bulls" on audiobook. It was interesting to listen to her side of Hemingway, after reading Martha Gellhorn's (the only of Ernest's ex-wives to leave him) "Travels With Myself and Another" (1978), and her biography: "Gellhorn: A Twentieth-Century Life" (2004) by Caroline Moorehead. BTW: if you ever have a chance to read Gellhorn's "The View From the Ground" (1988), I highly recommend it. Can you tell I am a fan?

Anyway, as for Valerie's work, I will wait to comment after you've had a chance to read it.

Happy reading!

No, no, I haven't read any of them yet. A bunch of them arrived, I *think* I'll read one... and then I change my mind. I've read nothing since -- oh crap, now I don't even remember the last book that I read. I just know it was on my Kindle. No, wait, I remember... A Kiss Before Dying. But that short book took me four days! Work gets in the way. Work sucks!

It was LookingForMayberry who described it! Blame her! I haven't even read it yet.

(But if it's really good, you can give us both the credit. )

Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolph Anaya.
Those who have seen my posts on this forum know that I'm a fan of Latino literature (though I'm not Latina There are a few different levels of Latino literature in my book (no pun intended). There are those books written originally in Spanish, but translated into English, though they read better in Spanish, like the works of Isabel Allende or Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Then, there are the books that read as well in either language, as a matter of fact, I'm not sure which came first, the English or the Spanish, like Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate or The Law of Love. Then there are those written in English, like the brilliant works of Luis Alberto Urrea, that require little knowledge of Spanish, though it helps.
Finally, there are books like Bless Me Ultima, a gorgeous, poetic story, written in English, but, unfortunately, can't be fully understood unless you speak some Spanish. It's basically written in English, for Spanish speakers. My husband hates books like these, where they throw in another language and just expect you to understand it. He thinks it's elitist. Since I speak Spanish well, I'm thoroughly enjoying it, but I can see how you might feel you're missing something if you don't. Even so, I highly recommend it - and sorry for the long diatribe! I just had to share.
