I am currently not reading (). I am taking advantage of my free month of Amazon Prime I got with my Kindle Fire (which I am seriously thinking I need to continue by the way) and watching the first two seasons of Downton Abbey. I am loving this show!!! (I highly recommend if even the slightest bit interested!!) When I finish that, my wonderful Sissy bought me Gone Girl for the Kindle, and I'll be reading that.

I love Downton Abbey. I can't wait for season 3 in January.
I love my Kindle.
I love that you have free prime for a month. I buy a lot from amazon and I've saved a lot of money over the years with the prime membership because shipping is free on most items.
I'm reading Tearing the Silence by Ursula Hegi recommended to me by Netwit.
I had previously read Stones From the River by the same author. Jess5 recommended that one.
Both books are excellent.
Thank you, Net and Jess.
I finished Tearing the Silence last night. It's subtitled, "on being German in America." Someone had given it to my husband, and I happened to pick it up to move it while dusting (I do do that occasionally) and being a bookworm, of course, paged through and was hooked.
The author has interviewed Germans born during or just after the war, who ended up immigrating to the US at different ages. She lets them tell their own stories. Now both my husband and I are Russian Mennonite, not German, although the Germans like to claim us sometimes as Volksdeutsche.
In any event, I've also lived in Germany while my husband taught there, in addition to having many German friends and acquaintances here - the Canadian-German experience isn't that much different than the American German experience. The 'silence' the title refers to is the reluctance of Germans to discuss the Holocaust even with their children.
So the stories are the children's reactions and interpretations of that silence. I'd recommend the book for German ex-pats, Germans, and those interested in the personal stories behind the Second World war.
Just finished the audio book "The Emperor's Tomb," by Steve Berry. Wow! This is a book for Young Lisa! What a wild ride. It was fast-paced, and during the occasional lull the reader/listener learns about interesting facts of Chinese history, the theory of fossil fuels, and for the young at heart there's a romantic interest.
I liked it and will look for more of his works, but I think I will read them. The reader on the audio was -- well, not so good.

I'd be so happy if I didn't have a job this week so I could get through both seasons uninterrupted. I'm glad I won't have to wait long for season 3.
I'm loving the Prime! I ordered a couple of Christmas presents, and chose the free 2-day shipping. I ordered them Saturday. I figured they wouldn't get shipped until Monday because it was the weekend and I would have them by Wednesday and that was fine. Nope, they got shipped a couple of hours after I ordered them and I got them Monday. I could not believe it! I just have to convince hubby that the $79/year is worth it. I think it is, but he's not into visiting Amazon that much. He was impressed with the fast shipping though so here's hoping.... I also like that you can borrow books for the Kindle with Prime. I borrowed one, but didn't finish it as I started watching Downton Abbey. It was by one of my favorite authors, but I just wasn't feeling the characters so I'm kind of glad I didn't buy it. I usually buy her stuff new too.
ETA: Since this is the book forum, I should point out that the scenes from WWI in Downton Abbey (at least what I have seen so far) are very intersting to me. I remember reading All Quiet on the Western Front in college and trying to imagine the trenches and all that. This show kind of put better pictures in my head I think.

Just a couple of words about Downton Abbey in January: Shirley MacClaine as Cora's American mother.
I just checked and there are several Downton Abbey books by the Fellowes' who created the characters.

Ah! One of my library Kindle holds came through, so I'm soon going to start on Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo. It's supposed to be a remarkable book. It won the National Book Award and seems to be on all the Top Ten for 2012 lists. The author has also won the Pulitzer Prize.
I see that Jodi Picoult has a new book coming out in February or March. The Storyteller.
It's about a young woman in a small community who lives next door to a much loved elderly man. He asks her to kill him and says when he tells her why he deserves to die she will not hesitate to kill him.
Sounds right up my alley. She almost always surprises me with the endings of her books.
My computer calendar is filling up with reminders of books that will come out in 2013.
