I am rankled that none of my other library Kindle holds are ready for me and that the book (The Beautiful Forevers) that I was reading was killing me with boredom.

I'll wait until after dinner and if, dammit, I'm in a reading mood, I'm going to buy that book. Yes, I am!

ETA: Change of plans. I got The Virgin Suicides in the mail today (in paper). I remember once starting it but I have no recollection of finishing it. And, of course, the book is long gone. So I'll read that. And, maybe, by the time I finish it, one of my library books will be ready for me. And, also maybe, the library will get The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. Maybe.
Well. There's been another change of plans. I read the first chapter of The Virgin Suicides and now I remember why I never finished it all those years back when it first came out: even though I know it's fiction, I can't stomach the talk (and description) of a suicide. It's just not a subject I deal well with, although I did read The Suicide Index by Joan Wickersham when that came out, and that's non-fiction. I guess her take on it felt "better" for me. Anyway, let's not go there.

I'm going to read The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. It's a classic of sorts and won the 1961 National Book Award, although that award hasn't worked well for me lately. I feel like I'm going to like this one, though.

I'll let you know - I swore off all Oprah-recommended books after she led me to "We Were the Mulvaneys" and Joyce Carol Oates who the only nice thing that I can say about is that she is prolific. I'm sure she has her fans, but her dark, dark ways are not for me.

We'll see if Hattie makes me forgive Oprah!

Did you know that East of Eden (by Steinbeck) was one of her picks? That's actually on my "to read" list, but not because of her. It's because of the thread here about sociopaths!

Well, I finally finished "The Passage" by Justin Cronin. I know others here loved it, but I am afraid I am not one of those. It started off so well and then . . . ah well, I have posted my thoughts about it elsewhere. It was just really disappointing and I won't be reading "The Twelve."

Now it's off to Peter Heller's "The Dog Stars" - hope I have better luck with it.

I recently finished reading Small is Beautiful by E.F. Schumacher. It's a book that discusses the idea of Buddhist economics. It was for a class but I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a very enlightening book.

Over winter break I intend to finish The Hobbit so that I can go see the movie.
