So what do you think?? The Gulag books are on my (imaginary) required-reading list, and I fell that Part 2 is particularly important.

After I read them, I felt like I could never waste my time reading a light fluffy book again!

I just started part 2, but so far it's fascinating.

Do you happen to know of any other Gulag writings (other than Applebaum's 'Gulag')? Information is lacking...

I have not found anything else like Solzhenitsen's work. The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz starts in a camp, then chronicles their escape. If I hadn't read Gulag, I might not have believed it. I have a few books on my list to read (but haven't found): Til my Tale is Told, Women Tales of the Gulag; Laogai the Chinese Gulag by Hongda Harry Wu; To Destroy You is No Loss by JoAn D. Criddle (Cambodia). Also, Tolstoy's Redemption is a story of the unfortunate conviction of a young woman...not about the camps, but you know what the future holds for her.

Amazing, isn't it, that there is so little to be found? Does Russia have a free press now? I'm guessing not really, or there would be more...

Oh, ON TOPIC, I am currantly reading Stones from the River by Ursula Heigi...of all things it is about a dwarf girl growing up in Nazi Germany! Very good so far.

Just finished Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. Bizarre! Clever, but twisted.

And, I am America and So Can You! by Stephen Cobert. Love it love it love it.

I read "The Faith of Barack Obama". It was short and easy to read. I thought it was well written as it just gave some real basic information on his religious upbringing and his beliefs as an adult. There were so many rumors going around about his religious preferences, I thought it would be good to learn some facts.
