There's an important message in the book, many (too many) fascinating facts and statistics, but the book sure would have benefited from a good editor. Too much crammed in there, kind of a kitchen sink of a book.
Just finished a novel, Tomato Girl by Pupek, Jayne. Her debut. All I can say is "Wow." A powerful book that kept me up much of the night reading. A dark book that made me gasp in places, and very worthwhile reading. Best fiction I've read in a long while. High recommendation.
I just started Visions of Emma Blau, by Ursula Hegi. I enjoyed her book Stones from the River so much last month! So far the writing is just as good. I was (am?) reading The Man who Turned into Himself, which is amusing but not great, but I seem to have lost it!!
I saw this thread and thought I should jump in, since I am just now gaining enough free time from less time consuming college classes to read again!
I just finished the entire Twilight series in about two weeks and absolutely LOVED them. Something about them just really grabbed me...I'd say Twilight and Breaking Dawn are my favorites followed by Eclipse and New Moon. But I really want to read them again, because I'm afraid that since I read them so quick I didn't pay as much attetion to detail as I would have liked (especially in New Moon, b/c it was my least favorite and I just wanted to get to Eclipse!). I think it is funny b/c I have NEVER gotten into books that are series...not Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings...nothing that was popular when I was in high school...now I'm a senior in college and can't get enough of Twilight lol. I find it fascinating how different books/series attract different people.
So, currently I'm reading Wuthering Heights by Bronte, which I find to be a slow read...but I'm doing it! On my shelf I have Marley and Me, The Other Boleyn Girl, Pound for Pound and two Jane Austen books...Emma and Mansfield Park. I want to finish all of those by the end of summer...but I'm probably going to put a few of them on hold and read the Twilight series again like I said before. I'm also thinking about reading her book The Host though I'm not sure what it's about...
The other recent books I've read are The Notebook and The Lovely Bones (Alice Seabold). I really enjoyed both.
Since I've been ill and haven't sallied forth to the library, I plucked an oldie-but-goodie off the shelf: The Fools In Town Are On Our Side, by Ross Thomas.
If you've never read him, you really should. He wrote extremely good crime novels until his death in the 1990s. Just a writer's writer. Superior dialog, complex plotting, and always fun to read.
