Just finished Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night. I laughed out loud at the last paragraph.
Started reading At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks by Peter Bromski. The stories themselves are good, but I found myself skipping most of the introduction and preface.
Jesus Land by Julia Sheeres - a memoir about growing up in a fundamentalist religious family in Indiana with her black adopted brother. Sheeres is white. The two of them are sent to a weird reform school in the Caribbean.
Saw this on a library shelf and knew I had to read it. I like to savor books and take my time with them, but finished this one in three days. Highly recommended.
Almost half-way through Muriel Barbery's "The Elegance of the Hedgehog", and I'm thinking there is something wrong. I suspect it is the translation. I feel like I'm reading a hilarious French novel that has been rendered into English by a translator (Alison Anderson) who has no sense of humor. It just isn't funny, but I know damned well that it was intended to be. In any case, it's nice to read a book for a change written by a genuinely intelligent writer (a professor of philosophy).
I just finished "Doggie day care murder" by Laurien Berenson. I love dogs, I love murder mysteries, but I don't think I'll request another book of this series. I finished it in spite of certain characters, LOL. A bit snooty perhaps?
Now I'll "go safe" and continue with Roger the Chapman series xD
I finally finished All Quiet on the Western Front, the traditional A.H. Wheen translation. What a wonderful book. Of course, it wasn't the happiest of books, but I really felt like I knew what it was like for the characters to be out on the front. It was intense, though. It's not too long of a book, but it took me awhile to finish because I had to stop every chapter or two and put the book away because of the emotions I felt while reading. I am so glad I finally read it. Fantastic.
Next up is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. I've been looking forward to this one ever since I read a review of it in the NY Times.
PIXIE: IF you don't mind me calling you thus..(let me know)....Pixie...I have read all the books you had listed...(loved them)...but have not as yet read... "The President's Vampire"...I am interested in uncanny phenomena, so that shall be my next...Thanks for the list as well.....ALLEXIS! SMILE!
