I bought this book last month after reading several reviews about it. Haven't started it so thanks for the reminder.

Am now well into the first third of this book....it's really interesting. Beautifully written, also.

That is exactly the same thought I had! Sounds like one of his titles. Then my brain said, "Eh! Eh! Eh! If you haven't read it (or even know it's his title), then it ain't his book!"

I remember picking this up and reading the cover...it got horrible reviews, too.

Everything I read was positive, including the NPR review below. I just finished the book. It was different, certainly.
Book Review: 'The Particular Sadness Of Lemon Cake' By Aimee Bender ? 'A Slice Of Salinger' : NPR

This is my Book Club's September pick. I will begin with some trepidation this weekend. More later!

OK - I just finished it. Not a book that I would have would have chosen on my own, but I did enjoy it. Actually, I really enjoyed it and appreciate it's uniqueness and quirkiness. Be prepared - there are absolutely no quotation marks so it can be difficult to follow some conversations. It is also a bit herky-jerky regarding time frames so at points, I found myself thinking that months had gone by when it had been years. In spite of those glitches, the premise of the book is clever and thought-provoking and I am looking forward to my book club discussion.

Default Not a hit at Book Club

We discussed this book at last night's book club. It was definitely NOT a favorite of anyone's. I might have been the most positive about it because even though I thought it was quite odd, I appreciated the uniqueness of the premise. Many of the readers in our group just couldn't get past the magical realism and were turned off by the impracticality of some of the characters' decisions.

Overall, I think the author had some very good material but sloppy transitions and too many side plots and under-developed characters distracted from the underlying story.

I'm not sorry I read it, but others in my group probably can't say the same.

Next up - The Other Wes Moore.

I would be put off by the silly title, but I do know that's not always a good indicator of whether a book is good or not. However, judging by the opinions of my fellow CD-ers, I think I'll skip it.
