King said the sequel, "Dr. Sleep," picks up three years after the end of "The Shining." It follows Danny Torrance, the little boy with the gift (?) of clairvoyance, who's now living in Tampa, Fla., with his mom Wendy. Predictably, since King is King, young Danny (he's now 8) sees something hideous in his new home -- and I'm not talking obnoxious Florida Gator fans. Instead, it appears the fire that supposedly destroyed the Overlook and all it contained didn't do a thorough job.
I am so excited! "The Shining" is the book that made me a Stephen King fan. To this day it still sticks in my mind.
I didn't enjoy reading The Shining as much as some of the other early King books because it was so different from the movie (which I thought was light years better than the book) and it had been so hyped up. But I look forward to this new novel.
I disagree. As mood piece, Kubrick's movie is a masterpiece of horror. As a compelling story with interesting characters, it's just cold. Jack looks crazy in scene 1. He's definitely crazy by the end. In between, he does some typing. Where's the drama in that?

I liked the movie because it was more psychological horror. Not as heavy on the supernatural. I just think that worked better for the film.
According to King's site, StephenKing.com - Future Works
"Dr. Sleep" publish date is Sept. of 2013 (sure seems like a long wait from now)
-but whenever it comes out, I'll be signing up to local library's reserve/hold list to borrow it.
I thought Kubrick's film was superb - a psychological horror masterpiece. I really enjoyed the novel too - more than most of King's other novels. I will definitely be looking out for any sequel to "The Shining"!
Slightly off topic, but for those who haven't yet read it I can highly, highly recommend King's autobiography "On Writing" - it's very entertaining and he demonstrates and explains the literary techniques that help to make him such an skillful author - and how these techniques are equally as important as the imaginative and creative element in creating a first class piece of writing.
I particularly enjoyed his list of recommended reading at the end - I had read, and really enjoyed, many of the books and I totally understood why they resonated with him - all in different ways and for different reasons.
He comes across as a very pleasant, intelligent and amusing person
Two more days before this is available. I gave up on Stephen King a long time ago, but The Shining was one his best. I want to see what happened to Danny Torrance. So I ordered it, looking forward to it showing up on my Kindle on Tuesday.
