For sure!

All of Tuchman's books are wonderful.

The Proud Tower and The Guns of August are both the best accounts, I think, of the events that led to World War I.

World War I changed everything that followed in the 20th century. If a person wants a real understanding of the 20th century, it's vital to know about the causes and effects of that war. Much of what began then is still in place today.

What a great topic this is! It ought to get a sticky. Every one of the books mentioned is worth reading.

Regarding WW2. I really wish to recommend a number of book which still have no equal.

Brute Force: Allied Strategy & Tactics in WW2 by John Ellis
A look at the war which shows just how many mistakes were made and the men lost. By the numbers.

Sharp End: The Fighting Man in WW2 by John Ellis
Acts of War: Behavior of Men in Battle by Richard Holmes
A view of what the decisions made in the first book were evidenced in the experiences by the fellows who did the fighting and dying.

Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. It's a general look at the development of countries in relation to available resources allowing them to make weapons. That's a broad description, but that's it in a nutshell
