Oversized pictorial book on history from the origins of civilization to Napoleon. Interesting aspect is that the drawings in books used the same facial representations of major historic figures-Alexander, Caesar, Columbus, Napoleon, etc. Almost as if the artist reused the same faces for each period in history. Even background characters. I mean that as the now funny part. Used many colors and the renderings were as stills from a cartoon.

Very vivid artwork on the ancient civilizations-Mesop, Nile, Ganges, Mekong, Yangtze and later BC empires-Greek, Persian, Roman. In particular there is a detailed piece on two rammed ships at Salamis.

I visit ebay every now and then for it but no luck as there are a few thousand entries.

Could it have been any of the books by David Maccaulay? He immediately sprang to mind, and I'm totally blanking on any others at the moment lol.

No but thank you for trying.

The drawn characters were rather large and filled the pages. Actually they all seemed to be a bit pudgy! I actually found an acquaintance who remembered the same book and read it as a youngster as well!

Found it. Apparently the illustrator, Cornelius DeWitt has quite a reputation.

A Golden Book?!
That looks very cool, something I would've loved when I was young.

Ah. That was my first guess...that it was a Giant Golden Book because I had a couple in the 50s myself. One was a book of Bible stories with great drawings.

Glad you found it.
