I have been watching some fascinating documentaries on China recently ( political and social commentary with some history sprinkled in) and have decided I am far too ignorant about this immense and culturally varied land.

I know very little about it apart from what I was taught in History and Politics classes and would like to widen my knowledge a little bit.

I have read a couple of books about it but would like some recommendations for a "general" potted history of China and then maybe one of "Modern China" from the Boxer rebellion until today.

I would be grateful for any recommendation you can throw my way ! Thanks.

I'm currently reading China by Patricia Buckley Ebrey. It's a good book.

You might enjoy a nonfiction book called "Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of New China" by John Pomfret. I read it in 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed it as did my nonfiction book discussion group.

Amazon.com: Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China (9780805086645): John Pomfret: Books

Scroll down for the book description.
