Hello. I recently broke two ribs and the healing process is slow.

Historically, I have been an avid reader; but the past couple of years have been busy and down time has been scarce.

Could anyone suggest some new or newer books that would keep me enthralled and busy - in an immobile sort of way?

I was thinking of rereading some Southern Gothic Classics, but I am wondering if their is anything new in that genre?

Not into Sci-Fi or Romance.

Accessible contemporary authors who I have enjoyed include Wally Lamb,
Caleb Carr and Anna Quindlin.

I also enjoy novels set in New England, the South, the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and some creative non fiction.

See this is what happens, if you neglect reading, the Universe will find a way to slow you down!

If you enjoy novels set in New England in the 40s 50s 60s you might like the writings of Elizabeth Ogelvie (sp)? She set her stories mostly on the islands off the coast of Maine and the travails of the families.

If you like well researched historical fiction check out the works of Eugenia Price. You may already have read her works. She does a great job of bringing the south alive before, during and after the Civil War.

You might enjoy Stephen King's latest novel 11/22/63. It takes place in Maine and Texas and is a story of time travel, but the bulk of the story takes place in 1958 -1963. The premise of the book is that a present day teacher learns of a way to travel back to 1958 and decides to try to interrupt the assassination of President Kennedy.

Now before you automatically say that you don't like Stephen King, let me tell you that this was the first King novel that I have ever read (I don't like science fiction or spooky genres) and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Plus 900 or so pages, your ribs will have totally and completely healed by the time you turn the last page!

Pinetreelover - I agree 100%. Now you should try some of his other works. They are not all totally science fiction and spooky, some are just "fun" like "IT" for total escapism. I also liked "Shawshank" alot., the movie that was made from that was good too. The first book of his I ever read of his was "Dead Zone".

She is one of my favorite authors. I read all of her books. I havent read her last one yet because my library didn't have it, but it's been 6 months since it came out so I can request that they get it now. It's Light From a Distant Star.
The best ones, IMO, are Songs in Ordinary Time, Vanished, A Hole in the Universe, and Lost Mother.

My memory must be going. I checked the books on Amazon, and I see that I have read ALL of her books except for the very last two, which I just ordered. Some have stayed in my mind longer I guess. But...this writer never disappoints.

You may want to check out "Pink Chimneys" by Adreana Hamlin. It is based on a true story and takes place in Bangor, ME. She just came out with a sequel a few months ago but I can't remember what it's called.

How about Pat Conroy. The prince of tides is a really great book that has the south and NY city as locations. After you read the book you could watch the movie with Barbra Striesend and Nic Nolte. Some of his other books are good too but the POTides is the best in IMO.
