I am looking for books that take place in new england. I would like some books set in the fall with the typical autumn imagery. Things like the changing leaves or rustling leaves, cool crisp air. I think you know what I mean. Any type of book other than a romance type is good. Any help would be appreciated!
Any of Jennifer McMahon's books (all weird murder mysteries--some with ghosts-- involving young girls set in rural Vermont) Don't Breathe a Word Promise Not to Tell Island of Lost Girls Dismantled
Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout
A bunch of short stories from different points of view of residents of the same New England town. Really engrossing character studies, and you really can visualize the New England settings.
An old novel from the Early 70s: Crawlspace, by Herbert Lieberman
I just re-read it recently when I found it on ebay for $1.00 (after having read it back when I was around 12). Creepy psychological thriller, but really makes you see, hear, and experience the New England surroundings in a small town, as an older couple gets sucked into helping a strange, frightening, mentally ill man and he becomes the center of their lives.
Also, as the other poster mentioned, a lot of John Irving's books take place in New England, though I can't recall how descriptive they were of the setting.
For some reason the movie The Spitfire Grill just popped into my head. I wonder if it was based on a book, because it was very focused on the New England/ Maine setting. Anyway, if it's not a book, sorry, but definitely watch the movie!
The Cider House Rules by John Irving. I did not like the movie and have not read the book, though. (Maine)
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, get the unabridged full version. It takes place in Concord MA mainly and it's not just for kids!
Of course there are many classics set in New England--Ethan Frome, The Scarlett Letter, Moby Dick.
Plenty of Stephen King books are set in New England.
Though I haven't read The Cider House Rules, John Irving does tend to set his novels in New England, at least in part -- The World Accoring to Garp and A Prayer For Owen meany are mostly set in New England.
The Chatham school Affair - Thomas H. Cook
That Old Cape Magic - Rchard Russo
Some of Robert B Parker (Spenser series)
