I was reading about Edward Stratemeyer, the man who started the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series. He had started himself as a ghost-writer for a series called the Rover Boys years before (starting late 1800's I believe). Then, he began the Hardy Boys and other series later on. He would write the outlines for each story, and hire ghost writers for each series.
The Hardy Boys was attributed to "Franklin W Dixon" who was actually a ghost name for Stratemeyer's outlines, which were then written at length by several different authors, mainly Leslie McFarlane who did the first 19 novels of the series. He did the same thing with the Nancy Drew series, using a female writer named Mildred Wirt Benson (and later others) under the pseudonym of "Carolyn Keene."
I have read the first 3 Hardy Boys novels and look forward to reading others in his other series.
I read all of Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twins when I was young. My brother read all the Hardy Boys.

I read both series and also the whole Little House on the Prairie series. (I doubt any of my brothers read the Hardy Boys.)
A family that I babysat for had all four of these series on one tall bookshelf (plus a ton of other books, series or not) and they let me borrow from their collection. I remember reading one or two books to the kids while getting them settled for the night.

I read all of the above - sister and I had ND and Bobbsey Twins, brother had HB - he also had The Three Investigators - which I also read, and I also read Trixey Beldon series.
I just bought the first Nancy Drew at a used bookstore. I think it's like the Secret of the Old Clock. Is that a good one start with? (I've read a few Hardy Boys already.)
I definitely preferred Trixie Belden to Nancy Drew. Nancy was a little too vanilla, too perfect...Trixie was a tomboy & actually had a personality. I read a few Hardy Boys/Bobbsey Twins books but I think there were better mystery series around.
