I just watched a great documentary on him by Ken Burns and it reminded me that i always wanted to read a really good biography of him. I'm slowly working my way through all the Mark Twain books and hope to make it to his autobiography as well.

Have you read his autobiography?

Volume One is intimidating, there is a lot to read. But it gives me a lot of insight into the man.
There is plenty of humor along with some poignant moments. HOWEVER--it is not in chronological order.
It's really huge and bulky both physically and figuratively.

Life on the Mississippi might work better for you.
