Sir Salman Rushdie has said he does not think his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses would be published today because of a climate of "fear and nervousness".
The writer said the banning of his book in many countries and the subsequent threats on his life had created a "long-term chilling effect".
"A book which was critical of Islam would be difficult to be published now," he told the BBC's Will Gompertz.
I think it might still be published but by a smaller publishing house or eBook only. There are more outlets to self-publish now as well. Though he might be correct. It definitely is a cooler climate to express those sorts of ideas - sadly.
There was much more than "nervousness." The Ayatollah declared a fatwa on him, and he received numerous death threats from all over the world. I think there were actual bomb attacks in London. Lots of people died in riots and bombings.
