You SK fans should google "SK tours" that are run by Stuart Tinker. It's a great site. I may try one soon as Stuart only lives about a mile and a half from me. I thought it was a fair price for a 3 hour tour.
Penny Wise in the sewer was the scariest thing ever, gave me goose bumps, and in my family we has a no clown zone in all our homes, clowns are not allowed. if you buy us one, we will throw it out.
I read all his stuff but I don't think anything will come close to the thrills I felt when I first read "Salems Lot" and "The Shining" though...good times.
I love just about everything Stephen King puts out. I don't usually get scared by his books, (although Salem's Lot did me in at age 13, my first SK book I ever read), I enjoy, absolutely ENJOY his story telling. I love that he takes a long time to tell the story, build it up, build up and develop the characters to the point that by the time I'm done reading, I either hate them or like them but I'm never indifferent.
For me, it's how he tells the story that delights me to no end.
Some people gripe and complain about the length of his books and say, "you could have cut out at least 2/3 of that and came to the same conclusion" but I think, they don't truly get Stephen King. It's the story telling that is the best part, not necessarily what happens to everyone at the end.

Oh yeah. 'Salems Lot scared the daylights out of me. I remember taking it to work each day and reading during lunch and breaks. The movies are both scary, too, but nothing like the book.
There was another book of that genre out about the same time. It was not a King book but it scared me big time. Mephisto Waltz.

the only clown that will kill you is Ronald McDonald. This morning I ate breakfast there, over 1000 calories in the big breakfast. Never Knew...but I was already committed, so I delved in.
I thought IT was a good story, except, as mentioned before, when Bev has sex with everone..wierd. I knew I was hooked when Georgie was snared by Pennywise.
The publishers promoted it as a "JFK assassination book," and it really isn't. I'm certainly no JFK buff, and I loved the book. The JFK assassination is certainly part of the plot, but it isn't what makes it so good. It's a very hard book to describe. But if I had to, I'd say, "It's like the best Quantum Leap episode never made." Even though there are some horror elements to it, it really isn't a horror novel. In tone, it has a lot of the same elements that made the Back to the Future movies so endearing. Great characters. A lot of nostalgia. But King isn't afraid to show the warts of the early '60s along with all the good stuff.
My brother had the book IT as a teenager, then lost the book. I've been looking, already looked actually, for the book on Amazon, but still undecided rather to send off for it or not.
I'm almost done with The Shining, just some pages left to read, a really great book by Stephen King.
