James Fenimore Cooper? I never really enjoyed The Last of the Mohicans. How about Herman Melville?

Hemingway -- too many exotic locations, none of the local character of Steinbeck and O'Hara.

James Michener. I've always thought a hallmark of a good writer is being able to convey the meaning clearly in as few words as possible.

Heningway was a great writer, and it's so funny you mentioned Steinbeck, who has not held up at all IMO. His book Travels with Charlie was outed as a fraud & not the non-fiction book he said it was.

Ha! Travels With Charlie is still one of my favorite books. Fact or fiction matters naught! :-)

Jane Austin makes me crazy.
