At some point during my teen years (I am now in my early 50's) I read a true story about a soldier that escaped from a Nazi prison camp.
It was a harrowing account of his escape from the camp and his survival in the woods, hiding in people's barns, etc. until he finally reached freedom. He talks about having to play "dead" after going before the firing squad with other prisoners and falling into a mass grave, at which point he plays dead until he is "carted" out of the camp, etc.
I have never forgotten it, but I just can't remember the name of the writer of the title. It's just a book I checked out at our local library one day.

I've probably read 20 books about holocaust survivors (interestingly, many of them seem to have been written by women). I don't recall that one. I do remember one where a guy was about to get executed over a pit and somehow he escaped or something happened at the last second and he ran into some trees but I can't remember the book.
I'd call a Jewish cultural center. If there is not one in your location then call a local rabbi. He might not know the answer but he will know someone who can help you in your search.
Also, your local library probably has a reference librarian. That person will probably be able to find out the name of the book.
One more place to check: If there is a university in your area then there might be a prof who teaches WW2 history or Jewish history.
Don't give up. If that book has stayed with you so long then you NEED it and I am very familiar with that feeling. Good luck.
ETA: I wonder if it was this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruno_Touschek There apparently was a book back in 1981 but it is out of print so I don't know what the actual book was about. Apparently he went on to become an important physicist.

If you're talking about an Allied soldier escaping from a German prison camp (not a prisoner escaping from a concentration camp) it might have been one of these. I've just discovered them recently, as I found an ancestor who was in Stalag Luft III, from which one of the authors below escaped and was recaptured. (It was also the camp where "The Great Escape" happened.)
Is it titled "My summer with a german solider " or something close to that ? because I remember that book and also a movie with Kristy McNichol and Bruce Davidson (he played the german soldier ) . I remember the book very well and also the movie .
Nice sounding book sounds like a good read. Did you ever find out the title?
