Good topic. I need to look at some SF books! I would say Dennis Lehane is under appreciated. Mystic Rive, Shutter Island, being the best.

A guy named William Zink wrote a book called Ballad of the Confessor that was a work of genius. Of course, because it's genius, it went out of print in about a year.

As far as underappreciated authors, I would have to say almost all poets qualify... except Billy Collins. He's much too appreciated.
