When I was in high school I read a short story that was written by a popular author. I have searched for this story many times, but have never found it.

Since the people on this forum are more familiar with books and other literary works, I was hoping that you could help me identify it.

Basically, The story is about a "show" that is going to be broadcast on television. I recall in the story that there was a lot of bru-ha-ha leading up to the broadcast. That for months ahead of time there were billboards saying ... "It's coming" Or "Only two weeks left". And that ultimately you learn that it is called "the greatest show ever" or "the biggest show on earth" or something like that.

I recall that it was going to be a huge variety show with hundreds of acts, acrobats, singers, dancers, etc. and that it was going to go on for hours. And that everybody on earth was going to be watching it at exactly the same time....

The punch line of the short story was that someone (aliens, or enemies, or "someone") was going to take over the earth (or maybe it was just invade the United States, but I think, I recall that it was some kind of nefarious inter-galactic plan to take over the whole Earth.

One of the closing lines in the story was one of the minions was asking the Leader of the invasion how on earth he managed to put billions of people to sleep at the same time.....ANd that was the purpose of "the greatest show" and the huge build up so that everybody in the world would be watching the same television show.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?: I would love to find out the name of the story and/or the author.

Thanks for any help.
