Americans have been nominated for the first time. Initially, British critics were disappointed with the American authors chosen because Commonwealth authors like Martin Amis, Ian McEwan and Donna Tartt were edged out.

They opened the Man Booker Prize to authors outside the Commonwealth, which is kind of good because now good books from elsewhere can get a chance to be nominated for the Man Booker Prize.
