I too like the Body Farm novels by Jefferson Bass - just finished the newest one The Breaking Point. It is the 9th fiction book although each one can basically stand alone. There are 2 non-fiction books as well, based on many of the cases in Dr Bass's career. Jefferson is a great writer who provides twists and turns, forensic information and a dash of humor as well.

I don't read a lot of mystery myself but check out Brian Freeman. Doesn't meet the time period but still worth checking out I think.
