It turns out the library can do more than just shush you. If you accumulate enough unpaid late fees, some New York libraries are ready to hit you where it really hurts: your credit score. They have reported millions of dollars in such bad debts. Most people make good before their creditworthiness is damaged. But there is something chilling in this kind of threat from a library.

It does seem extreme. I know that the last few times I was in any one of the NYC libraries, I used several, there was much to do about the number of un-returned books in the system.

In fact I had about 10 poetry books that I had forgotten about for several years. I had taken the books out as part of a Poetry Workshop, with the express understanding on the part of the librarian, part of our group, that we could have them indefinitely...well that was probably not a good thing in the long run.

But I did return them all and/or pay up before I left the City.

If they start making reports to credit reporting agencies people will start getting library cards under pseudo names.

NYC isn't the easiest town, and getting a library card isn't the easiest of acquisitions in the Apple. I can't recall what is needed, but I do remember being annoyed that I didn't have it when I went for a new card.

It is highly unlikely that false documents will get you the Complete Works Shakespeare.

Unless you're an illegal alien. Or are libraries in NY illegal alien free zones?

I hardly ever watch Seinfeld, but wish I had watched this one--because yup, the library or at least several of the branches can be quite funny.

Interesting question!

I think I remember now what I needed to get my renewal, after a hiatus of about 10 years: proof I lived in the City.

So, I suppose any illegal alien could get a library card, and then a book, CD, or movie just like the rest of the Apple dwellers.
