Check out the Scholastic Books website for ideas too. I think they have lots of tools for finding age appropriate/reading level books.

Don't get stuck on children's books. There are a lot of perfectly appropriate books written for the adult market. I read my son "Lord of the Rings" (the whoole thing) when he was seven. Ray Bradbury wrote a couple of lovely books about children -- "Dandelion Wine" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes". He loved "Out of Africa". Jules Verne would be good: "20,000 Leagues" or "80 Days". Books from times past are a wonderful way to introduce her to history, like "My Antonia" or "Giants in the Earth" or "Call of the Wild". Or Steinbeck's "The Red Pony". A few recent bestsellers would be good, like "Secret Life of Bees" and "My Sister's Keeper".

Pay her the compliment of assuming she is ready. If she's not, she'll express her impatience with it, put it on the shelf for a year or two.
