Really, really enjoyed Joe Campbell's work, but looking for other good authors in this vein.
I can Google up about 2 dozen but wanted to see what you guys and gals thought? Thanks.

It is not a 'discussion' book so much, the author does speak of the tales and stories. The book is a collection of myth, fairy tales and folklore.
'The Riverside Anthology of Children's Literature'
It is 'children's' stories because that is what many have become in modern times. But not all stories started out with that intent.
Might be a bit of a stretch 'in vain', but the books (may be a bit off with the titles), are 'Nothing In This Book Is True, But It's Exactly How Things Are' and 'Something In This Book Is True'.

Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales by Bruno Bettelheim is a seminal work in the genre, and very readable.

Also look for books by Jack Zipes.

I liked Parallel Myths, as it explored common themes in early mythology (and religions) all over the world.
Amazon.com: Parallel Myths (9780345381460): J.F. Bierlein: Books

I also have this one, but my copy is old and looks different. It's about creations myths in different parts of the world.

I know I must have read it, because it's on my shelves with some pages dog-eared. Must have read it in the 90s, I would guess. But I can't remember if it was good or not, or if I liked the one I posted above better.
