I adored "Shadow of the Wind", I thought it was brilliantly written, incredibly evocative and gripping to the last.

I particularly like historical mysteries and have hundreds in my collection.
The best IMO in that genre are by :

Lindsey Davis ( Imperial Rome, reign of Vespasian)
PJ Sansom ( English dissolution of the Monasteries)
Steven Saylor ( over a 50 year period during the Roman Republic starting with Sulla)
Peter Tremayne ( Ancient Ireland- 7th century)
Michael Jecks ( Medieval Cornwall and Devon)
Susanna Gregory ( Cambridge-14th century)
Ian Morson ( Oxford 13th century)
Edward Marston ( Doomsday series)

I just started a new book by Steven Saylor set in Austin, Texas in the 1880 "Honour the Dead" and so far ,so excellent...

And one of my favourite books of the last decades " The Tenderness of Wolves" by Stef Penney, which I absolutely loved. It's set in the Canadian winter of 1867 and though classed as a mystery is just a great book, period. It explores many subtle themes of human nature.

Here's another thread I started on the subject of mystery writers. It was very helpful and I did manage to read several of the recommendations:

Default I like Stephen J. cannell mystery novels

His new mystery novel is Three Shirt Deal. I'm not great at explaining plot or story, so here is the video book trailer: Three Shirt Deal

I've been a fan of Tony Hillerman, Margaret Coel, Amy & David Thurlo, Linda Fairstein, Sue Grafton, Lisa Scottoline, et al for quite a while.

I've just started reading a series of novels by Donna Leon, detective mysteries set in Venice. I have to say she's quickly become one of my favorite authors.
