"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Persig is the only classic I can think of beginning with that letter.
Dan Chaon's "You Remind Me of Me" seems to be the only book I've read lately that fits. I would think there would be a log beginning with You, Your, Young, Yesterday and Yellow.
No one reading Gibbon can fail to notice the unfavorable comparison of several Roman armies with the Ten Thousand. Hired as mercenaries from Sparta they saw their client quickly defeated and killed. Not wishing to have a battle-hardened army in their misdst, the Persians invited the officers to a banquet where they slaughtered them. The Persians underestimated the Greeks who elected new officers and maintained the integrity of their force. Known to history as The Ten Thousand, they reached the sea to set sail for Greece.
Robin Waterfield puts Xenophon, the Greeks, and the Persians in perspective. It fills in the blanks that remain with the reader after finishing The Anabasis. While I disagreed with him on a number of points I'm very glad I read this book, There's a treasure trove of infomation. Happily, the first word of the title is Xenophon.
You can read this book before you read Xenophon, I'll wager that your tongue will be hanging out for Xenophon himself before you finish . I should mention that the Penguin edition of Xenophon is quite readable and the Modern Library edition of Gibbon in three volumes is complete.. For those who have not read Gibbon I adjure you to do so. Should anyone not know, the title of Gibbon's work is The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Written over two centuries ago, it's still the definitive work and a joy to read.
Reading a translation of Xenphon inspired me to brush up my very rusty Greek to read him in the original. That is an extraordinary literary experience.
