Anyone out there been a part of "The Big Read" one community/one read project? It's funded by the National Endowment of the Arts, but it seems like a load of work!

No, I haven't heard of it, but it sounds interesting. How would they get enough books?

The grant money that comes in from the NEA could be used to buy books as well as planning many activities around that book.

Good friend of mine is a MS librarian, and I think the schools where she lives/works are doing the Big Read project. Wish I knew more about it. To hear her talk it is a lot of work, but sounds like a lot of fun, too. I think she's involved in all sorts of things throughout the year.

Here's some info on the The Big Read.

I participated in a smaller, more local version of the "Big Read" in Vermont. We were gifted with the selected title, but were encouraged to re-circulate the book back to the library, or to friends and acquaintances.

We met at the end of about 1 month or 6 weeks after the book's distribution to discuss the book, and share our experience of the read twice, once at the local library and another time in the community grange.

In rural Vermont this project was a huge success, and the book selected was among one of the best I read this past summer, and was centred on local lore. It was also a book that crossed generations, and thus encouraged both adults and adolescents to read together.

and would love to be able to do this. I live in a suburb of a big city. There are no books released in my town, but they are in the city. I think they are swept up before I could get over to them!

Why don't you get on The Big Read and check out applying for the grant? You could conduct a community read in your community. Your local library would probably support you whole heartedly and give you the platform to run. It would be great fun, and you could really make gains for reading in your community. Read what some of the other big and small communities have done.

My community hosts "The Big Read". I participated in the last one. We read Fariheit 451. I enjoyed the book (agian), discussions and events.
