I read an article recently stating that this is what everyone does when they read. That seemed disingenuous to me. How does anyone know what happens in EVERYONEs head when they read?
Think about what we know about learning styles...some learn visually, some auditory, some through movement, so it only makes sense to me that we process written info in different ways.
I sometimes will stop and visualize briefly what I am reading, but mostly I gallop right through, waiting to see what will happen next rather than taking in the scenery. I suspect that is partly why I'm such a fast reader.
It depends upon the author. With Haggard, his highly descriptive style promotes visual imagery, although not necessarily a "movie." With other authors the plot moves in a more conceptual framework, especially if the protagonist is introverted.
I don't know that I create "little movies" in my head, but I always get a visual picture of the main characters. It can come from anywhere. It isn't necessarily an actor, but often it is. Sometimes, I picture people I know or have knows as characters.
I get pictures in my head, but don't often have clear pics of faces or physiognomy, except if a character is unusual in some way.
I absolutely cannot form clear pics of homes or floor plans or even geographical descriptions. I think I would love a map for each of my favorite books!
When I read I like to be my own director and just imagine it all.
Yes, I do the same thing. I imagine scenes and everything and sometimes I will edit the scene in my mind to make it fit more what I would like. I wish I had enough time to write a screenplay for lots of the books I've read. I can't do that too much with many of the historical non-fiction I like to read, but I do for autobiographies. I once started on two screenplays, but never finished (that was when I was reading fiction).
I imagine what the book is saying. Every time, I can paint a picture in my head what I think is going on. I have a wild imagination, so reading is actually a lot of fun since it takes me into a new world in some way.
