Hell House by Richard Matheson. Disturbing, to say the least.

Try Stephen King's Night Shift. It's short stories from his really early writings and they're amazing.

Skeleton Crew is a great early collection as well. It has the original novella The Mist is based on.

I think the Mist is one of his absolute best Much better than the movie.

I'm going to give you one more author that is NOT Stephen King.
The author is Graham Masterson. I've read one of his books that are comprised of a bunch of short stories. There were some stories that were better than others, but overall its a good scary book to read. Its called Figures of Fear

Graham Masterton is the author of The Manitou, which became a good creepy '70s horror film.

Another celebrated horror writer is British writer Ramsey Campbell. John Carpenter wanted to make a film from his book Hungry Moon, but it never came to pass.

Guy De Maupassant has some Edgar Allen Poe-esque stories that you may enjoy.

I love Poe as well.

Please keep the suggestions coming. And thanks.
Horror is a funny genre, very personal. Not all books or authors have the same effect. For example, I can't stand Clive Barker, I just think he's boring. I love early Stephen King, but not his later works.

I love Dracula by Bram Stoker. Yes it was written in 1897, but it's well written and just so incredibly creepy. It's a great winter read, just make sure someone else is in the house. The castle scenes will give you nightmares.

If you like incredibly evil monsters try Summer of Night by Dan Simmons - it's a great read. Your next evening walk if you hear rustling in the bushes you'll remember this book and wish you hadn't.

London Falling by Paul Cornell is a recent book that starts off as a police procedural then takes the most horrifying turn to the dark side and the most evil witch possible. A fantastic story. You'll think about it for weeks.

On the other hand, and this is when the horror genre becomes deeply personal, is The Ceremonies by T.E.D Klein. This book has haunted me for years...and you will never think of cats the same way again.
