I know this is a long shot, but if anyone can help I would be forever grateful. I am looking for a science fiction book from perhaps the late 80s (could be older) in which scientists projected their consciousness into alien civilizations to study and live among them sometimes for years at a time. The book covers several different alien species, and the trials and tribulations of the hostile alien environments. I remember one species in particular in which the male carried the babies.

Hmmm, the James Cameron movie Avatar?

Any seahorse-based society.
or
Ursula K LeGuin's The Left hand of Darkness? The society is composed of 'ambisexuals', where a hormonial cycle allows a person to be either gender during the reproductive cycle. You may be male this year and female the next. In humans, sometimes female roommates syncronize their menstral cycles - in TLHofD, being in confined quarters will cause phermones from A to force B to become the female - i.e., "I will make you my btch". or "Be the man I need you to be".

Thank you both for your responses. I have thought about that book occasionally for 30 years, and it drives me crazy that I can't remember more about it. The Left Hand of Darkness looks interesting, and I may add it to my good reads shelf!

Pretty sure Minds Eye is not it as it's more contemporary. Hal Clement is a good find! Thank you both.
