It's a few days after the fact, but I came across the news that Anna Dewdney, author of the "Llama Llama" children's books has died of brain cancer at 50.

This is a gut punch for me. I have two young children and regularly read some of her work. Those of you who regularly read children's books know that there is a huge difference between quality and junk in children's literature. I always enjoy Miss Dewdney's work, even upon the 54th reading. I believe her strength lied in capturing thoughts and emotions from the perspective of a child, something most of us have forgotten as adults.

I think she was a special talent and that this is a huge loss for modern children's literature. I'm sure it is a huge personal loss for those who know her.

I will continue to read her books to my children and hope that it will help foster the same lifetime love of reading that I have.

My heart sank when I saw your post. I have been purchasing and reading the Llama Llama series to my dear grandchildren for years. My toddler grandson always brings Llama Llama Red Pajama to me first to read to him. It is his favorite and the favorite of my two older grandsons and I trust my twin grands will favor it as well. I also buy this series often as baby gifts for showers. I am so saddened to hear of this great loss.
