I'm a current history major looking for books on social history. Mostly on life in the 40's-60's. Currently have" The Perfect Housewife in Ideal Homes" on order but need something in between. Mad Men ain't cutting it lol. Any suggestions on books you've read?

I didn't read this one yet, but have it on my wish list.

The Levittowns (NY, NJ, PA, MD) were built in the post-war years when the economy was booming and more and more people decided suburban houses were their American dream. This Levittown is in PA, and I live a few miles away. I had heard that early on it had a whites-only policy, and bookmarked this book to buy in the future.

I suggest you get books that were WRITTEN in the 40s to 60s. They will give you a wonderful insight into life during those times. You could even go a lighter route and read books by Robert Benchley and Bennett Cerf. The humor will entertain you AND educate you.

Thanks guys. I'm going with Revolutionary Road now and I'll move on to On the Road. I figure those are light starters books while doing some more research!

Those are two great choices! If you like Revolutionary Road, try "The Collected Stories of Richard Yates".
