I have a few henti manga that I purchased on a visit to my city's "Little Japan" section, just for curiosity. I'm interested in art and also interested in Japanese culture, and the minor expense was worth it.
They are in Japanese which is not one of the languages I understand beyond a few words, so I have to infer the story from the illustrations. I'll admit much of it is baffling. My understanding improved when I realized Japanese books read in the opposite direction from Western books, and that page 1 is where Westerners would consider the back of the book.
If it weren't for the effort I'd prefer to scan them and discard the physical books, so as to have access if I ever want to look at them again but that is probably unlikely.
I doubt I'll purchase any in the future, and I gave up Western comic books when I was in my tweens, having migrated to traditional novels.
Manga are sometimes referred to as "graphic novels", and while I am perfectly aware that are hidden gems, I think that they're graphically poor and the story-telling is often just as bad. They are just simplistic appeals to sex and violence hidden in stories like boy is an outcast in high school can't get girls and is bullied, boy finds out he has some kind of super power, boy kicks bullies' behinds and gets all the girls. 90% of manga follow this pattern, they're even more formatted than a Hollywood blockbuster. But hey, it takes all kinds.
You should understand what mangas, partacularly hentai mangas, are intended for. They are not like US comic books of past. Hentai mangas are often read by Japanese salarymen who must commute to work on Japan's (fast) trains perhaps an hour each way. The point isn't the art, it's the naughtiness and that they are bored, reading in an environment that has many distractions.
You are exactly right. The artwork is poor, the plots are simplistic, and the main feature is violence and sex. Hentai mangas are Japanese porn.
If I were commuting that way I'd be reading ebooks.

Finding sex in hentai is obvious, that's what they're for. Just like any other slash slash production the point is not the story but to materialize the viewer's fantasies, and escape their boring lives and sexless marriages. The problem with manga is the recipe is always the same no matter the sub-genre. Dragon Ball Z had the protagonists kicking, punching and grunting for so long they couldn't remember why they were fighting about in the first place. Sailor Moon showed those young cute girls wearing very short skirts, and suggesting grown women-like curves while changing into their superpowers.
I know Japanese people often lead very boring, consensual lives and manga are a valid form of cheap escapism. Now I would wish that Western readers would go for more creativity.

Westerners do. That is why most Westerners do not know what manga is, or the meaning of hentai.
I liked LONE WOLF AND CUB a lot. Haven't found much else that appeals to me.
