Do you give up on an audio book if you don't like the narrator? I like to listen to audio books when I work around the house but if I don't like the narrator I can't really get into the story and I give up on it. Is anyone else like this? Some narrators can make a so-so book a truly enjoyable and some narrators can ruin a really good book.
My favorite narrator is Davina Porter who narrates the "Outlander" books. I have listened to other books solely because Davina Porter was the narrator. Do you have a favorite narrator?
Definitely! If a narrators voice is not to my liking, no matter how badly I want to hear the book, I won't. I've stopped a few audio books after a few chapters because of the voice.
I wish Franscis McDormand would narrate more books. I love her voice. She did the audio on the cassette tapes of The Bell Jar and I no longer have them. I got the digital audio book and it's a different narrator now. Made me quite sad.
I do voiceover work from time to time in video games and radio commercials but would really like to break into audiobooks. I've been a reader since I was a very small child and as a result can blind-read copy perfectly, as if I'm speaking it and not reading (this is the key to getting VO work, as well as sounding interested in the material). Seeing this thread just reminds me to get on the ball with this--thanks for posting this, OP.

You have and excellent quality voice, Bob, and yes, you would do well as a book narrator. Your voice reminds me of some of the better audio book narrators I have heard over the years.
Some of the readers on Librivox (free audio books) are great, while many others are not so good. I don't know if the good readers do this as a passion project, or are trying to break into the industry and get paid.
One librivox reader I like a lot is named Karen Savage.
Some narrators don't stand out, and that's fine. Others, like Tim Robbins tone-perfect reading of The Great Gastby, or Edward Hermann's wonderful rendition of Roger Ebert's Life Itself, add immensely to an audio experience. On the other hand, whoever read The Sun Also Rises was so unpleasant to me that I gave up after half an hour.
