We talk about fiction here, but I thought I'd actually post a piece.

It's "The Children's Story," by the popular James Clavell (author of Taipan and Shogun), written in the 1960s, and meant at the time to be a cautionary tale about the dangers of Communism, I suppose. It's very good, vivid, and rather chilling. It was so well-received that the story in a magazine was later published as a book.

But apropos of our current politics, I was now looking at it in a completely different way. The persuasive elementary school teacher here reminds me of many of the same things the Alt-Right is doing - undermining some of the basics of what America has always believed in, such as the reliability of the press, and now the Alt-Right idea that we should tear down anything honoring Washington is uncomfortably similar to this tearing up the flag. So, it's interesting in itself, but maybe newly relevant again.

Hope that some of you read it - and find it interesting.
