I've been trying to remember a science fiction book series from the late 1980s and early 1990s that I saw in a bookstore when I was in school. It was set in the near future and covered the exploration/colonization of space by the United States. I think it was called something like America 2020.

It had a 'westward ho' Wagons west feel to it and I do recall it referenced some kind of nuclear war in South Africa.

I've been trying to remember this series off and on now for several years. Any help you all can come up with would be appreciated.
Thanks

The wagon train in space doesn't sound familiar but Ralph Peters War 2020 featured an American military stagnanted and bypassed by emerging technologies losing a war in South Africa. Apartheid was still in effect when it was published

I've read the Peters' book and it is different from the one I am trying to remember. The book series I am thinking of had aliens in it and was off planet.
