Barbara Kingsolver

The Bean Trees
Animal Dreams
Lacuna
Flight Behavior

Anne Tyler

A Spool of Blue Thread
Back When We Were Grownups
Morgan's Passing
Celestial Navigation

Both these fiction writers offer a combination of funny, very clever, poignant...nothing silly or light...both are students of the human heart.

Heehee...I think so.

I have all Tyler's books and read them over and over....never get tired of them...her characters are so well-developed...and so quirky...funny, poignant, she knows what is in the minds and hearts of us all.

While unoriginal, I love the following:

Isabel Allende (House of the Spirits, Of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna)
Margaret Atwood (Cat's Eye, The Blind Assassin, Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale)
Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife)

Oh yes...they could all have been on my list.

All three write deeply thought out novels....to me, they are very original authors.

Did Allende write Like Water for Chocolate..?

Gerri Hill
Ann Bannon
Sarah Waters
Catherine Wilson
Jeanette Winterson

Most of the above are prolific writers of lesbian novels & pulp fiction. There are others in my book library, but these five are my favourites currently, especially Sarah Waters and her seriously excellent "Tipping the Velvet" and "Fingersmith"

Bel Canto was an unusual book, read it last year, but none of her others...
