I have read all of the John Corey series and there is one bit I don't understand in this book that I was hoping someone could help me out with. In book 6, Buck tries to kill John and Paul, and John swears to get revenge by killing him. In this book they have a brief encounter, then at the end of the book he says to Buck "We're even. Let's keep it that way." followed by the internal monologue "I have to remember to tell Paul Brenner to remove Buck from his hit list."
What I don't understand is how they're "even" now. After the events of the book I would probably want to kill Buck even more than before. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.
