A friend posted this on Facebook the other day and I immediately fell in love. So much so that I had it printed at Costco (8x10 matte, in case you're curious) and will put it in a frame this weekend. I think it's fabulous and funny and lovely. I thought that I'd share it with you.

Love it Dawn. Thanks for sharing. Did you notice that it wasn't John who signed the letter? I would think, when asking something so personal, he would have signed it, not his secretary.

Any neophyte who wants to familiarize him/herself with Steinbeck might want to read:

Flight (short story)
The Grapes of Wrath
East of Eden

and to lighten things up, Cannery Row / Sweet Thursday

There was, simply, no one else in his league.

East of Eden was absolutely brilliant. One of my favorites, by far.

Flight is an excellent starting point -- a story that will break your heart; used to be emphasized in (junior) high school when I was coming of age; The Grapes of Wrath, with its "sidebars" between chapters, shows an earlier more-simplistic side to Steinbeck, but he clearly.went on -- and deeper -- from there.

And with its constant use of Biblical parallels (no less than three Cain-and-Abel stories), and coupled with the theme of twins by different fathers, nothing else comes close to East of Eden.
